We LOVE field trips at St. Luke! The opportunity for students to learn in different environments and through new experiences is so valuable! Here are a few field trips to look forward to during your St. Luke journey:
Support staff at St. Luke help strengthen the level of academic intervention during school. This intervention can mean challenging a student who is exceeding grade level expectations or supporting a student in making quick gains in reading or math. At St. Luke, interventions can also include social-emotional support, such as daily check-ins, lunches with a teacher, or scheduled breaks to reduce anxiety or stress. We truly aim to meet the needs of each child and take pride in recognizing the unique areas in which a student would benefit from care and encouragement. We believe that each student at St. Luke is under the care of our entire staff, and we work together to help students feel seen, known, and celebrated.
Hot lunch is available for purchase two times a week and currently includes pizza from Little Caesar's and burritos from Luis' Taqueria. Families preorder hot lunch in trimester blocks. Milk is available for purchase daily and is also preordered in trimester blocks. If students choose not to order hot lunch, they bring their favorite foods to enjoy during lunch time, and microwaves are available for their use.
Students who qualify for Title services receive intensive intervention for reading support three days a week at St. Luke. In partnership with the Woodburn School District, St. Luke employs an in-house reading specialist. She works with students to build confidence and competency in reading skills. She is trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading intervention, which is a prescriptive way to teach literacy when reading, writing, and spelling does not come easily to individuals, such as those with dyslexia. The reading specialist partners with the teaching staff to analyze multiple sources of student data and celebrate student effort and success.
Middle school students are invited to apply to be members of the student leadership team. This group meets weekly during recess throughout most of the school year and plans service experiences, spirit activities, and school events. Leadership members host all trimester assemblies, Catholic Schools Week, all-school service projects, and various spirit weeks. They also run a school store and serve as schoolwide birthday ambassadors.
Grades 6, 7, and 8 are offered elective courses each trimester with a variety of options that extend the curriculum. Electives meet each Friday afternoon and mix middle school students based on interest. Recent elective offerings have included knitting, scrapbooking, service, book club, drama, running club, chess, and photography. We have even had a few guest instructors from the community lead electives! Students cherish this time to interact with fellow middle schoolers, acquire new skills, and broaden their horizons as they prepare for high school.
Much of our school programming aims to foster community and draw St. Luke families together. We have several events during the school year meant to be enjoyed by all! Our Christmas program includes a lovely evening of song and celebration. During Catholic Schools Week we host an academic showcase to share projects and progress. In the spring, we host an art show, inviting our families and St. Luke parishioners to stroll through the hallway and take in student creativity. The last day of school includes an all-school carnival, celebrating the success of the year and allowing families to make summer plans to get together. We truly value the involvement and support of our families at St. Luke and aim to include you in as many ways as possible!
